Health — Your puppies first 16 weeks
|
Try to keep your puppy away from public places until he/she has received all of his/her puppy shots. A trip to the park
before all the puppy shots can be life threatening! Puppies need medical care early and often to keep them healthy and
prevent diseases.
Four Weeks Old: Wean from mom. Start quality food, first veterinary visit, first de-worm medication
Six Weeks Old: Second Veterinary visit. Complete physical, check weight, discuss health, flea control, 1st set of
vaccines, worm test and/or de-worm. Go to new home.
Nine Weeks Old: Third Veterinary visit, re-check, second set of vaccines, re-deworm, address any health or behavior
issues.
12 Weeks Old: Fourth Veterinary visit, re-check- re-weight, third set of vaccines, rabies vaccine, start heartworm
preventative.
16 Weeks Old: Fifth Veterinary visit, re-check, re-weigh, fourth set of puppy vaccines, and kennel cough vaccine,
address any problems.
If you plan to neuter/spay your dog, that can be planned at six months of age or older. If you are definitely going to have
your female spayed, and do not want any puppies, please spay them before the first heat cycle. This will prevent
mammary cancer! The first heat cycle can occur any time after 6 months of age. Keep your puppy on heartworm
preventative all of its life! It insures to prevent hookworms, round worms, and heartworms. Your next puppy vaccines
and check-up will be due at 15 months of age if following this schedule.
